If you have prediabetes, your blood glucose levels are high — but not high enough to say you have diabetes. Those with prediabetes are five to 15 times more likely to get diabetes and are at risk for heart disease and stroke.
Prediabetes often has no symptoms. Many people don't even know they have it. Your doctor probably tested your blood glucose because you had several risk factors. These include being overweight and having high blood pressure, high cholesterol or a family history of diabetes.
The most important treatments for prediabetes are exercise and weight loss. Just losing 10 to 15 pounds can reduce your risk for diabetes. Exercise for 30 minutes at least five times per week. And choose healthy foods, such as fruits, vegetables and whole grains.
Your doctor will test you for diabetes regularly and may suggest medicine to control your blood glucose.
