To check for hair lice, you can look through your hair with a lice comb (a finely- toothed comb that you can buy at a local drugstore) for any hints of Egg Lice, Baby Lice, Adult Lice, or Lice Feces:
- Egg Lice look like dandruff flakes. They are oval-shaped and yellowish or grayish-white in color. They are usually found on the shaft of the hair—very close to the scalp.
- Adult Lice are about the size of a sesame seed and are yellowish to grayish in color. They may be hard to spot because they move around quickly by crawling from one place to another.
- Baby Lice are also yellowish to grayish in color. But they are smaller in size than adult lice. They may also be hard to spot because they move around quickly by crawling from one place to another.
- Lice Feces look like black, powdery specks in the hair.
If you are not sure whether or not you have hair lice, you can also visit your health-care provider to get a diagnosis.
