Vaginal Yeast Infection - Treatment

If you are not sure whether or not you have a yeast infection, please call your doctor and schedule an appointment. Many conditions have symptoms similar to the symptoms of yeast infection, so see a doctor to obtain the correct diagnosis before starting treatment.

If you do have a yeast infection and you are not pregnant, there over-the-counter products you can use to treat the infection and relieve some of the symptoms. If your symptoms are mild, you may want to wait to see if they clear up on their own before trying a medication.

Antifungal medications that are available as creams, ointments, or suppositories that are inserted into the vagina can be used to treat yeast infections. Note that the oils in some antifungal creams or suppository weaken latex, so don’t depend on condoms or diaphragms for birth control if you are on these medications.

Yeast infections are common during pregnancy. Please consult a doctor before using any yeast infection medications on your own if you are pregnant.

For recurrent yeast infections, infections that occur more often than four times a year, see your doctor to see if there may be underlying health problems causing the frequent infections such as diabetes.
