LIFESTYLE CHANGES
Increase fiber in the diet.
- Include at least 20 to 35 grams of fiber every day into the diet to make the stool softer and bulkier.
Foods high in fiber include:
- Beans
- Whole grains
- Fresh fruits
- Vegetables
Drink plenty of fluids.
- Drink at least 6 to 8 glasses of water every day to make soften the stool.
Exercise.
- Take walks after dinner to stimulate muscle contractions in the intestines.
Change toileting habits.
- Set enough time every day to go to the toilet. Do not ignore the need to have a bowel movement.
OVER-THE-COUNTER PRODUCTS
Laxatives, which accelerate bowel movements, are the main over-the-counter products used for constipation. These are the different types of laxatives currently available. However, please note these are only designed for short-term use. In addition, some laxatives may interfere with certain medications that you may be taking. So, be sure to speak with your doctor or pharmacists before choosing an appropriate laxative to use.
BULK FORMING AGENTS
EXAMPLES:
- Polycarbophil (FiberCon), Psyllium (Metamucil), and Methylcellulose (Citrucel).
STIMULANTS (encourages bowel movement)
EXAMPLES:
- Castor Oil, Bisacodyl (Dulcolax Laxative), and Senna (Senokot).

EXAMPLES:
- Docusate sodium (Colace, D-S-S)

Hyperosmotic Agents
EXAMPLES:
- Glycerin, Sorbitol, Lactulose, PEG 3350/polyethylene glycol (Miralax)
Saline laxatives

- milk of magnesia (magnesium hydroxide), Epsom salt (magnesium sulfate), and magnesium citrate
