It is not possible to treat lactose intolerance. However, you can minimize the symptoms associated with lactose intolerance by limiting the amount of lactose-related dairy products in your diet. To compensate for the shortage of calcium that you would normally get from dairy products, you can take calcium supplements, eat foods that are rich in calcium (including salmon, dark green vegetables, oranges, almonds, etc.), or drink lactose-free milk and milk products. In addition, there is an over-the-counter product called Lactase that comes in the form of tablets, chewables, or liquids. Taking these before a lactose-containing meal will help ease some of the symptoms associated with lactose intolerance.
Please see your doctor if:
- You child is younger than 2 years old and is experiencing symptoms of lactose intolerance.
- Your symptoms worsen.
