For mild to moderate cases of dandruff, it is sufficient to wash the hair and scalp with regular shampoo either every day or every other day.
However, if your dandruff does not appear to be improving, there are anti-dandruff shampoos that can be used to help you get rid of the dandruff. It is important to follow the directions exactly as written on the label. Consistent use is the key. As a general rule of thumb, you should use the shampoo 2-3 times per week for up to 3 weeks (to treat the dandruff) and then 1 time per week (to manage the condition). You must leave the shampoo on your scalp for at least 5 minutes to give it time to work. Common ingredients found in medicated shampoos include: coal tar, pyrithione zinc, selenium sulfide, ketoconazole, tea tree oil, and salicylic acid. Please note that some of these ingredients can affect the color of your hair while some can cause an allergic reaction in some people. Check with a pharmacist before selecting a product.
If over-the-counter dandruff shampoos do not work for you, you should go see your doctor to determine whether or not it is actually dandruff and recommend the appropriate treatment for you.
