OVER-THE-COUNTER PRODUCTS
Hair lice can be treated with over-the-counter lice-killing products that come in the form of shampoos, cream rinses, foams, solutions, gels, or lotions. Examples of common products include Nix and Rid. Because these products contain pesticides such as permethrin or pyrethrin, it is very important to carefully follow the label instructions to minimize side effects. Some products may require a second treatment 7 to 10 days after the first head lice treatment.
It has been shown that some hair lice have become resistant to the pesticides found in the over-the-counter lice killing products. You should go see your doctor if the non-prescription product you are using is not effective in getting rid of lice. Your doctor can prescribe a prescription shampoo that contains stronger ingredients.
SELF CARE MEASURES
Alternatively, there are also natural remedies that other people have tried and found to be effective in getting rid of hair lice. For example, you can apply a one-to-one mixture of vinegar and water to your hair for 30 to 60 minute OR olive oil for 2 to 3 hours, then rinse hair, and use lice comb to remove dead lice.
