1. Become a techie. Learn about all the equipment that you need to take care of your diabetes. Do you know what each monitor, pump and device does? Do you know how to care for your equipment? Do you know how to read the results? Ask your family to show you.
2. Eat healthy. By making good food choice, you are showing your family that you are able to take care of yourself. So pass on those "fat-free" desserts, and head for the salad bar!
3. Know your doctors and pharmacist. Don't be afraid to speak up if you have a question for your doctor or pharmacist. This is your body and your health...and you have a say!
4. Take care of your teeth. What do teeth have to do with diabetes, you ask? A lot! Problems with your gums and teeth affect your blood sugar levels and vice versa. So, bursh and floss after every meal!
5. Ask for help. It's okay to ask for help from your parents, school nurse, or a trusted adult. If you feel ill, make sure that you tell someone. And, always wear your medical ID jewelry. That way, if you feel ill and can't ask for help, someone will know exactly the type of help that you need.
