Debunking Health Myths

Image

Health myths have a way of spreading like weeds, especially when they concern topics many men would rather not discuss. Here's the truth about two common myths.

Urinary incontinence (Ul) is a normal part of getting older.

Myth. Ul is more common in older adults, but it's not inevitable. It's often caused by a treatable medical problem, such as an enlarged prostate. Sometimes treatment is as easy as using the bathroom at regu¬lar intervals. Talk with your physician if you experience Ul.

Men can have breast cancer.

Fact. Women are much more likely to have breast cancer, but men can develop it, too.
Risk factors include:
•    Age — men between ages 60 and 70
•    Family history of breast cancer
•    Radiation exposure, such as for treatment of a cancer in the chest
•    Heavy drinking
•    Obesity

Possible signs include breast lumps and nipple discharge. See your physician if you notice these signs.
