Halloween is coming, and your child will want to take part in school parties and trick-or-treating. You're concerned about how to manage her blood-glucose levels during the festivities. Here's help:
• Eat only the best. Have your child pick her favorite pieces of candy from her Halloween haul and get rid of the rest. As she enjoys a few pieces in the days following Halloween, use this as an opportunity to discuss how to manage fluctuating glucose levels.
• Modify your family's ideas about Halloween. It doesn't have to be all about candy. Focus on easy-and-fun decorations the kids can help make for the house, yard, etc. Check out local events such as haunted hayrides. Host a Halloween party for friends and include healthy food choices along with a few treats.
