Do I Need Special Dietetic Foods?

Image

If you're newly diagnosed with diabetes, you're likely to have many questions. This Q&A can help you get on the right track. Talk with your doctor and your registered dietitian about all your diabetes-related questions.

Q: Do I need to buy expensive dietetic foods?

A: There's no need to buy special foods. People with diabetes can eat everyday foods that the whole family eats. Choosing more non-starchy vegetables, for instance, can improve everyone's health.

Q: Is a diabetic diet boring?

A: There's no such thing as a single diabetic diet. These days, registered dietitians help people design their own meal plans to include their favorite foods. If you have trouble living with your meal plan, talk with your dietitian about making changes.

Q: Are starches and sweets off limits for people with diabetes?

A: No foods are completely forbidden. Carbohydrate foods, including foods such as bread, rice and corn, are part of a balanced meal plan. For all carbohydrate foods, including sweets, it's the amount that counts.
