In today's challenging economy, taking preventive steps to stay healthy makes good financial sense. Such measures often cost a lot less than treating a medical problem once it arises. That's one reason people often turn to dietary supplements.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration monitors safety and product information for dietary supplements once they're on the market. However, these products aren't tested for effectiveness like prescription and over-the-counter drugs are. When considering a supplement, get as much information as you can from reliable sources like your Good Neighbor Pharmacy Pharmacist or doctor. Discuss the safety of taking the supplement along with other medications, and never stop taking your prescription medications without checking with your doctor.

Some supplements can help you get enough of the nutrients your body needs. Others may help lower your risk for specific health conditions. Here are a few that researchers have found effective:

• Lutein and zeaxanthin are nutrients that studies show protect and maintain healthy cells in the eyes. They may help protect against eye diseases such as cataracts and age-related macular degeneration. These antioxidants are plentiful in green leafy veggies like spinach. There's no recommended daily amount, but studies are based on a daily supplement of 10mg lutein and 2mg zeaxanthin.

• Panax ginseng is an herb people often take to improve thinking, memory and stamina. Used for more than two thousand years, ginseng has been found to lower blood sugar in people
with type 2 diabetes and boost sexual function in men. In research studies, 200mg daily helped with diabetes. Male erection problems improved with 900mg three times a day.

• Milk thistle is often used to help liver function by protecting and promoting the growth of liver cells. The herb may help ease heartburn and lower blood sugar in people with type 2 diabetes.
Most studies used 1 mL three times daily for heartburn, and 200mg of Silymarin — a compound in milk thistle— three times daily for diabetes.

• Saw palmetto is best known for treating symptoms of enlarged prostate gland in men. Some studies have found the supplement to be an effective treatment.
