Q: My doctor and I have decided that I should lose about 20 pounds to be at my healthiest weight. I’d love to have some tips to help make the journey ahead a bit easier.
A: There are a number of things you can do to help yourself lose weight in a healthful way.
Try these tips:
- Eat at least three times per day.
- Pay attention to your body. When you feel like you have had enough to eat, stop. Quit eating before you feel full or stuffed. You can have more if you are really hungry.
- If you still feel hungry or unsatisfied after a meal or snack, wait at least 10 minutes before you have more food. Often, the craving will go away.
- Drink plenty of water. You may be thirsty, not hungry.
- Get plenty of fiber in your diet. Vegetables, fruits and whole grains are good sources. Try high-fiber cereal with fruit for breakfast.
- Limit your alcohol consumption.
- Keep all food in the kitchen. Eat only in a chosen place, such as at the table. Don’t eat in the car, in the bedroom or in front of the TV.
