High-fructose corn syrup may be a factor behind the rise in type 2 diabetes, according to a study of data from 43 countries. The proportion of people with diabetes was 20 percent higher in countries with the greatest consumption of high-fructose corn syrup than in those with the least. There wasn't a significant difference in body mass index (a ratio of weight to height), total sugar intake, or total calories consumed among the countries, leading researchers to suggest that high-fructose corn syrup, in particular, is linked to type 2 diabetes. However, this study does not prove that consuming the sweetener directly causes type 2 diabetes.
