Most kids can’t wait to go on their first sleepover at a friend’s house. But for parents of a child with diabetes, this milestone brings some concerns and perhaps a little anxiety. To help make everyone in the family (and the family hosting the sleepover) feel more confident, plan the sleepover ahead of time and give the host parent(s) simple advice on dietary requirements, glucose monitoring, insulin injections, etc.
Make sure the family understands when and how to contact you. It’s also a good idea to talk to your diabetes care team, along with your child, about an insulin plan for sleepovers. Knowing that a plan is in place will give your child the confidence he or she needs to relax and enjoy the sleepover, confident that her diabetes-care needs will be under control.
