Kids and Diabetes: Fiber-Loving Teens Have Lower Diabetes Risk, Study Says

Image
Teenagers who eat a lot of fiber-rich foods' such as vegetables and whole grains, are less likely to have risk factors for diabetes and heart disease, a recent study shows.

Researchers at Michigan State University examined the diets of more than 2,000 U.S. teens ages 12 to 19. They also tested whether the teens had three or more of the following conditions: high blood pressure, elevated levels of sugar and fats in the blood, low levels of HDL or "good" cholesterol or a large waistline.

Teens who ate low-fiber diets (less than 3 grams per 1,000 calories) had a three-times-higher incidence of these risk factors compared with teens who consumed more fiber (11 grams or more per 1,000 calories).
