On average, an American child younger than age 10 is killed or disabled by a gunshot every other day.
Here are some other frightening facts:
• Only car accidents kill more children than gunshots.
• A 3-year-old can pull the trigger of a gun.
If you have a gun in your home, take precautions to keep kids safe. Be sure to:
• Keep guns unloaded and locked in a safe or rack out of children's reach.
• Hide the keys or combination to your gun storage device.
• Lock bullets in a separate place from your gun.
• Put a trigger lock on your gun.
• Keep guns out of your home if a family member is depressed, has another mental illness (including dementia), has a history of violence or abuses drugs or alcohol.
• Teach kids that if they find a gum, they should leave it alone, leave the area, and tell an adult.
