There are lots of fun snacks you can prepare yourself, with the OK of your parent of caregiver (and a little help if you need it). Let’s get snacking!
- Fruit and cheese kabobs: Take strawberries, grapes and pineapple chunks, along with cubes of cheese, and thread them on a wooden kabob stick to make a pretty treat or dessert.
- Yogurt parfaits: Layer fruit yogurt in a clear glass with granola, cereal, fruit or frozen berries. Then dig in!
- Fruit pizza: Spread plain rice cakes with low-fat cream cheese. Then add fresh fruit in whatever design you like for your “pizza.”
- Banana split: Slice a banana into a bowl and top with fruit yogurt or frozen yogurt. Then add sliced strawberries. Sprinkle with chopped nuts.
- Veggies and dip: Arrange cut-up veggies on a plate. Try baby carrots, cauliflower, broccoli, celery and cherry tomatoes. Dip the veggies into bean dip and hummus. Or try low-fat ranch-style dressing as a great veggie dip.
- Ants on a log: Fill celery sticks with peanut butter or almond butter and place a few raisins, dried cranberries or dried cherries on top as the “ants.” Or cut an apple into slices and spread with a little peanut butter or almond butter, then sprinkle with raisins.
- Roll-up sandwiches: Lay a whole-wheat tortilla flat on a plate. Add a spread, such as mustard, mayo or cream cheese. Add meat and/or cheese and veggies, leaving about a half inch on one side without these ingredients. Roll the tortilla, starting on the side with the ingredients. Slice in half and enjoy
