While your doctor will work with you to create a plan to manage specific things about your diabetes, you will also want to do everything you can to maintain your overall health. There are specific things you can do to help:
• Get at least 30 minutes of moderate physical activity at least five days a week.
• Walk during your lunch break.
• Take the stairs instead of the elevator.
• Do household chores such as vacuuming and mopping.
• Eat more fruits and vegetables.
• Eat less fat, sugar and salt.
• Drink more water and fewer sugary drinks.
• Limit candy, sweets, chips and fried food.
• Cook more meals at home.
• Check your blood sugar at the times your doctor recommends.
• Brush and floss your teeth every day.
• If you smoke, quit. Ask your doctor or pharmacist to work with you to create a smoking-cessation plan.
