In a recent study, researchers did not find an association between a person’s race/ethnicity and his or her five-year risk of death or myocardial infarction/stroke in patients with type 2 diabetes. However, the more cardiovascular risk factors that were controlled, the higher the five-year survival rate was for all ethnic groups.
The trial included 1,750 participants from the U.S. and Canada, and the average follow-up was 5.3 years. Participants had type 2 diabetes and coronary artery disease and were randomly assigned to cardiac and diabetes treatment strategies. The study results appeared in The American Journal of Cardiology.
