It may seem like a tall order to eat healthy food all the time, especially if you're on a budget. Luckily, it's easier than it seems. Try these tips:
-Check food labels. Look for foods that are low in calories, solid fats and sodium. Avoid foods with sugar near the top of the ingredient list.
-Make healthy food swaps. Try these swaps:
Instead of: | Try: |
Soda, sports drinks and sugary juices | Water, low-fat milk or skim milk |
Butter, margarine or shortening for cooking | Vegetable oil or canola oil |
Red meat | Fish and chicken breast |
Chips, cookies and candy | Fresh fruit |
-Eat healthier from the can. When buying canned vegetables, look for products with low salt, and rinse them before eating. You can also rinse canned fruit to cut down on sugar. Look for canned fruit packed in juice, not syrup.
