There's no doubt that smartphones, tablet computers, e-readers and similar devices can make life easier and more fun. Too much of a good thing, however, may be bad news.
Overusing these electronic gadgets can cause eyestrain, headaches, double and blurred vision and dry eyes. These changes could help you avoid eye discomfort:
• Remind yourself to blink. When we look at digital screens, we tend to blink half as much as we should for normal eye comfort.
• Use artificial tears to re-wet your eyes as needed.
• Give your eyes a break every 20 minutes. Look at something that is 20 feet away for 20 seconds.
• If you wear contact lenses, use your glasses to view your phone screen once in a while.
• Buy a smartphone with the largest screen you can afford.
• Increase the type size and don't hold your phone too close to your eyes.
