Sexual problems in women with diabetes are not uncommon. Proper glucose control is the best way to help prevent diabetes-related sexual problems. But why do these problems occur in the first place?
Diabetes affects sexual function by damaging nerves and small blood vessels. This damage reduces blood flow to the genitals and decreases sensation. Women with diabetes may experience sexual problems as vaginal dryness, reduced sexual desire and decreased response, including difficulty climaxing. Prescription or over-the-counter vaginal lubricants and moisturizers can offer relief from vaginal dryness.
Women with diabetes have an unusually high risk of vaginal yeast infections as well. These infections can lead to pain or discomfort during intercourse. If you suspect a yeast infection is causing your discomfort, see your doctor. Yeast infection can be cleared up easily with an antifungal medication.
Talk with your doctor about all of these issues. Seeking treatment can improve your quality of life.
